STAGE 13 GRAND CANYON - FLAGSTAFF |
24th January 2001 |
We made it
to the bus first again this morning... we WERE doing
well. Had to be careful because the ground was icy...
Naturally the temperatures were rock bottom... freezing.
I thought it was great but Mum's angina was playing up
and she was in a MOOD. We stopped about 10am at an Indian Artifact shop, Denny's for a coffee. Jared had seen a western show at Disney World and had nagged about a whip... he'd really love one :-) Denny's had one... at the right price .... $6.50.. well, I don't know who was the bigger kid..Jared or George <grin> George had Jared cracking that whip before you could bat an eyelid!! They didn't serve food and since Mum hadn't had much breakfast she took off for a nearby coffee shop for a croissant and tea. Denny's was full of 'good stuff' according to Jared and George and I had to agree. There was a little snow on some boulders around the place so the usual snowball fight between George and Jared continued. On the way to the Grand Canyon we stopped at a place along Route 66 where there was a fascinating store with Route 66 memerobilia and next door was this wonderful 'junk' yard. There's some fun photos HERE but this is a taste of what we saw.... Lord.... an outdoor loo... complete with TV and phone though you can't see them in this pic. Everybody had their photo taken on the loo... strange fascinations some of us have <grin>. After lunch we headed for the Grand Canyon. The weather wasn't too bright, a lot of mist. As we drove into the National Park it was like being transported into a Christmas Card, one of those with the snow laden trees sparkling in the sunshine, Lord it was beautiful. I thought we were going to exit the same way so didn't take photos.... damn! We got to the Canyon but the mist clouded all the colours, however it was still a spectacle and we weren't disappointed. Jared had fun as usual in the snow but not with George... a couple of our fellow passengers were taking a helicopter ride over the Canyon and he'd taken them to the airport in the bus. But he made up for it when he got back. He and Jared were horsing around on the bus... this didn't please Mum ( her lousy morning mood returned). When we arrived at the Raddison in Flagstaff she had Jared in tears. George felt sorry for him so he took him when he went to refuel the bus. They were gone for ages and when Jared got back he said he didn't need any dinner... he'd eaten! We enquired as to what he had consumed.... "an ice cream (huge) and a Texas sized Kit Kat!" I laughed... Mum didn't...oh well... Our dinner was great... hey ... regular sized portions, just like at home! We're off to Laughlin tomorrow via Sedona...... |
